Magdalene Daniels Obituary

Magdalene Daniels, peacefully transitioned on April 18, 2024, while being embraced by the exceptional care of the staff and serenity at Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. She was born on November 15, 1937, in Gordon County, Georgia, to the late John and Lois Mitchell.

Her family moved to Rome, Georgia when she was a little girl and then migrated to Ohio in 1950 when she was 13 years old. They lived in Pataskala, Ohio and eventually moved to the city of Columbus, Ohio.

Madge (as she was affectionately called) started working at Schottenstein’s Department Stores, on September 29, 1957, at the age of 19 years old. She loved to share the story about how she was initially hired through the employment office to sort clothes there for one day, and that it was never just for one day, because they hired her. She retired in 2008 at the age of 71, from the advertising department after working for the company for 50 years!

Magdalene was the devoted wife to the late Larry Alex Daniels, who she married on June 20, 1970, in Chicago, Illinois. They were married for 39 years, until his passing in September of 2009. Together they raised four children, a boy and three girls. She was a wonderful mother that covered her children in prayer and raised them to know the Lord.

Madge served faithfully at her original place of worship, the Central Seventh Day Adventist Church for over 30 years. She loved music and was a skillful musician and singer.  She led the senior choir, played piano and the organ. She was Sabbath School Superintendent, and taught Sabbath school. She also took pride in helping manage the Fellowship Hall where church dinners would be held, and she would work in the kitchen, cooking, and prepping meals. She also took great joy in decorating the tables with beautiful floral arrangements.

Magdalene became a member of New Covenant Believers’ Church in Columbus, Ohio on September 9, 2017. She treasured the teachings of her Pastor, Bishop Howard Tillman and was a proud and loyal ministry partner. She began attending New Covenant Believers’ Church Southeast Campus in 2022 when her daughter Luanda was assigned there to serve. She enjoyed the services there immensely and was the self-appointed song leader for baptisms. She took baptisms seriously and didn’t believe in a whole bunch of talking and commotion during baptismal services.

Mrs. Daniels was an avid seamstress and passed these skills on to her daughters and granddaughters. Even in retirement she had plenty of clients she served by altering their garments. She believed in keeping busy and loved all sorts of arts and crafts, putting together puzzles, doing word finds and more.

She loved nature, was fond of birds, and enjoyed tending to her garden every year planting flowers, and vegetables; she loved planting marigolds and tomatoes! She loved good food and was a great cook. Some of her signature dishes were greens (collards and mixed), potato salad, corn bread, fried green tomatoes, fried pies, sweet potato pone, and prime steaks with onions and gravy to name a few. She made the best fresh salads with lots of green lettuces and many vegetables.

Madge was a ray of sunshine and lit up the room with her smile, and she was known for her sweet spirit. She loved children, being a grandmother and a great-grandmother brought her great joy. She was a generous soul and loved making stuffed animals for the children to play with and stuffed numbers and letters for learning. She loved sharing these items with her own children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as with any child she thought would enjoy her creations.

Madge was a quiet storm and was definitely-not a push over. She was strong and determined and could be feisty and sassy when necessary. She was a disciplinarian and wouldn’t hesitate to threaten to “snatch a knot” in someone’s (anyone’s) behind. She was a fighter until the end.

She had an unwavering trust and faith in the Lord God, and she shared many stories with her family and friends about how God always made a way out of no way. As a matter of fact, she would say He didn’t have to make a way, the way was already made! Her advice was to always trust in the Lord, pray and let God take care of the rest. So much more could be said about this wonderful lady, she made an impact on every life she touched. She will be sorely missed.

Magdalene was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lois Mitchell, her beloved husband, Larry A. Daniels, her son Paul D. Mitchell, and her brothers Jodie, John, Samuel, and Isaiah Mitchell.

She is survived by her brother Joseph Mitchell, sister Inez L. Wilkerson, and her daughters Lise’ A. Daniels, Luanda (Zakee) A. Daniels Taylor, and Lagena A. Daniels. Magdalene also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren Destiny (Edward) L. Daniels-Benson, Desiree J. Covington, Brooklyn L. Skiver, and MacKenzie L. Skiver, bonus grandchildren Samuel M.F. Taylor and Alexander Z.F. Taylor, as well as great-grandchildren Eshaun R. Benson, Ezra R. Benson, and Mckenzie L. M. Skiver. She will be deeply missed by her special friends Steve Goodrich (Merrilee), Glenna Clark, Sam Jones, The Schottenstein’s group, and a host of other relatives and friends.
