Alice Asamoa Obituary

Alice Afi Dzampe, popularly known as “Afiyo” was born January 9, 1942 at Taviefe- Aviefe Nyeviefe clan in Ghana, West Africa. She was the fifth child of Joseph Dzampe also known as “Afitor’’ and Salomey Yawa Kwakutse. She had three brothers: Gabriel, Godwin and Chris and one sister, Cecilia.

Alice grew up in Taviefe-Aviefe where she received her education. She attended the Roman Catholic (R.C) Primary School from 1948-1954 and Tavief-Avenya Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P.) Middle School in 1955 and took the Common Entrance Examination (a set of competitive tests taken by students to gain admission into selective schools in 1956).

Although, Alice was from a poor home, she was truly gifted with extraordinary intelligence. She was also multi-lingual. Alice passed the Entrance Examination and was admitted to Mawuli Secondary School in 1956. It was originally established as a boy’s school but became a co-educational school in 1955. Alice was among the first group of coed students. She was honored to be the first Senior Girls Prefect. It was a highly competitive and sought-after position, the most prestigious role a student could be awarded. A Prefect must have outstanding leadership skills and be a good role model for the younger students. He/she would represent the school at public events. Alice extended her high school education and completed the sixth form (an additional two years of secondary school prior to college). Alice will be remembered as a beautiful person not only physically but also in character and personality. From her youth she was known to be humble, quiet, religious, soft-spoken and well-mannered. She was greatly admired in her hometown and community in Ghana. She was athletic too. She played basketball, volleyball and ran track.

On January 8, 1963, Alice married Kofi Vovonyo Asamoa. In 1964, they moved to the United States of America where he was employed in The Foreign Ministry for the Ghanaian government. He travelled extensively for his job. In 1967, Alice returned to Ghana for a short time with her children: Dodzi, Kwami and Seko, where she began her professional career. She taught at the Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education at the Volta Region in 1968 and at St. Mary’s Amedzofe Secondary School in Korie-Gonna, Accra-Ghana from 1969-1970.

In January, 1971, Alice and her children returned to the U.S.A to join her husband after his tour of duty was over with the Foreign Ministry. The family settled in Lanham, Maryland. Alice continued her education. She attended Prince George’s Community College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Social Work and Howard University where she completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work and a Master’s Degree in English. In 1975, the family celebrated the birth of Sesi. She managed to work and care for her children and maintained a 4.0 grade average while in school.

While in school, Alice began working in the health care field which complemented her nurturing nature perfectly. Alice worked as a Nursing Assistant at the Hospital for Sick Children in Washington, D.C. and at the Magnolia Center Nursing Home in Maryland. Afterwards, she went back into the education field and worked at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Washington, D.C. in the English Department as the Head of the Tutoring Department.

On April 28, 1999, Alice lost her husband Kofi. They were married 36 years. Since that time Alice declared that “she was married to Christ”. She never complained or questioned God. Alice had a kind soul. She put her full strength in loving and doing for others. Her kind, Christ-like demeanor was a gift from God.

Alice relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 2014 to live with her son Kwami and his family. When her health became critical and hard to manage at home, Alice was admitted to the Canal Winchester Health and Rehabilitation Center in Canal Winchester, Ohio for skilled nursing care. In January, 2023 she was transferred to the Crown Pointe Care Center for hospice care. On February 14, 2023, Alice Afi Dzampe Asamoa passed away. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Alice was predeceased by her husband, Kofi V. Asamoa, her daughter, Seko; her parents, Joseph and Salomey Dzampe, her brothers, Gabriel, Godwin, and Chris. Thank God that her family has precious memories to sustain them.
