Annie Mae Price Hess, age 84, was born on July 7, 1935 to the late Annie Vada and Robert Penn. On Monday, March 16, 2020 an angel of God stopped by her residence to escort her home to be with the Lord. Annie Mae spent her youth and young adulthood in Ridgeway, Virginia and later relocated to Columbus, Ohio. She worked at Shatners Paper Company. Annie retired from The Ohio State University, Upham Hall, after 41 years of service. She will be remembered for giving many coworkers rides to and from work.
Annie Mae was married to Jesse Price and most recently to Thomas Hess. The unions were blessed with ten kids: five boys and five girls.
Mother Hess accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age. Upon moving to Columbus, she united with the newly organized Second Shiloh Baptist Church where she served for over 50 years. Mother Hess utilized her gift of a strong and beautiful alto voice by singing with the Travelettes, a gospel singing group organized by some of the ladies of Second Shiloh in the early days and was one of the original members of the Second Shiloh Senior Choir. She was a past member of the Columbus Vocal Union, WJF Choir, Director of the SSBC Senior Choir, Voices of Praise Choir and the Adult Mime Ministry. She also held the position of Church Clerk, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, and Vacation Bible School Teacher. She was a member of the Nurses Corp, Mission Ministry, Nursing Home Ministry, Deaconess and Minister’s Wives, the Mt. Calvary Minister’s Wives Association, and the Mother’s Board.
In 2010 she received the SSBC Woman of Distinction Award. Though she was a woman of few words, she quietly worked behind the scenes supporting almost every ministry of the church and always having a kind word of encouragement for all. Mother Hess served the Lord with joy and gladness!
