BARBAR A JEAN SMITH, daughter of Mamie Butler and Caleb London, was born on April 24, 1939, in Orlando, Florida. She lost her mother at the age of three, and along with her brother, Thomas Butler, was raised by their Aunt Floyce Little.
Barbara was introduced to Adventism through a revival tent effort, where she met her future husband, Alfonza Smith. The two were soon wed and blessed with four children: Terry Smith, Alfonza Smith Jr., Ronald Smith, and Tonya Smith. As an Air Force wife, Barbara was blessed to travel overseas. Spain was one of her favorite destinations, as well as several states in the U.S. While she enjoyed and embraced her role as a homemaker and dedicated mother, Barbara was also very active in her church. She gave of her time and service within several departments, including hospitality, community services, and funeral services.
She will be fondly remembered for her delicious cobblers, becoming widely sought after for her exceptional culinary skills. Barbara also prepared memorable desserts for the Allegheny West Conference camp meetings. Barbara had a genuine passion for people and opened her home for various occasions such as potlucks, dinners, parties, and gatherings for students, church members, and more. She extended her hospitality to strangers, offering a warm welcome and comfort, many of whom became life-long friends. Her love for children and family also led her to provide in-home daycare services.
She had a special place in her heart for her two granddaughters, Aliyah and Naiyah. She cherished moments spent with them, sharing stories, singing songs, and baking together. One of her favorite pastimes was enjoying fun-filled, late-night hours watching family sitcoms, filled with laughter and their favorite sweet treats!
Barbara took her final rest peacefully at her home on Thursday, November 28, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Barbara is survived by her brother, Thomas Butler; children, Terry Smith, Alfonza Smith, Jr., Ronald Smith, and Tonya Smith; granddaughters Aliyah Bryant and Naiyah Bryant; her beloved family pet, Teddy; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
