Cornet H. Powell, affectionately known as “Corey,” passed away tragically on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. He was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Wesley Powell, and father, Herman Powell, both from Akron, Ohio. Judy and Herman were high school sweethearts and were married in 1967 and moved to Houston, Texas, where Corey was born. The family later relocated to Columbus, Ohio.
Corey graduated from Bishop Hartley High School in 1999. He attended Ohio State University for several years. He attended culinary school, later working as an Executive Chef at the Scioto Country Club. Corey also worked at Chubby’s Sports Bar & Grill and the Crazee Mule Pub & Grill.
Corey enjoyed football; his favorite team was the Texas Longhorns. He was baptized at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in 1990, where he became a member. Corey lost his father at the age of 15 after a courageous battle with cancer. This ordeal deeply affected Corey’s life.
He is survived by daughter, Aiyyana Jade Powell; son, Cornet Ha’mad Powell, Jr.; friend, Felisha Ajtaji; Corey also leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing including his aunt, Cheryl Wesley Tanner of Akron, Ohio; and cousins, Rashaan and Jamal Wesley of California, Annette Holstein, Dustin Rambacher, and Lacy Foster of Columbus, Ohio.
