David Summers Obituary

David Lee Summers, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication to his family and community.

Born on February 17, 1951, in Statesville, North Carolina, David was the son of the late David J. N. Summers and Claudia Mae (Summers) Smith. The family moved to
Columbus, Ohio, when David was a small child.

On August 28, 1976, David married the love of his life, Debra Parks Summers, in a union that became the foundation of his world. Their 49 years together were a testament to deep, enduring love, marked by mutual respect, laughter, and a bond that only grew stronger with time. Together, they built a life full of cherished memories, support, and shared dreams.

David was a loving father to David (Kim) Wellborn, LaTonga (Robin) Smith, Kim (Taylor) Adams, and Lee Summers with his bonus daughters, Tallie Johns-Cheairs and Tiara Clark. He was a devoted grandfather to Aliyah “Grace” Summers, Xavier Summers David “DJ” Wellborn II, Elias Malone, Isiah Scott, Jalen (Jazmine) Gardner, the late Michael Marshall, Shaquayla Hoover, Taylor “Tay Tay” Adams, bounus granddaughter Brooke Adams. He also cherished his nine great-grandchildren.

David was a brother to the late Joseph (Jennette) Summers, Beatrice Charles, the late William Summers, Daaiyah Jordan, Gwendolyn Summers, Geoffrey Summers, Elliott Smith, and Ronald (Melonie) Smith; had brothers-in-law, late Maurice (Cathy) Parks, Robert W. Parks, Jr., Matthew (Debra) Parks, and Perri (Jancice) and Dwight Parks; and had sisters-in-law, Thyria (George) Shields, Glenna (Brooker) Mason, the late Sydney Parks, and the late Yolanda (Lonnie) Parks.

He came from a large family that overcame many challenges, showing resilience and unity throughout their lives. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who adored him.

After attending East High School, David began his career as a mechanic at the age of 17, working at a local Buick dealership. He continued in this field for many years, even transitioning to a Ford dealership. During his career, he faced a great tragedy when while working on a vehicle at work, the engine of a car exploded.  David sustained very serious injuries but recovered from the ordeal, proving his strength and determination.

In 1980, David enrolled in barber college. He worked at Donivan’s Barber Shop, Steven’s Barber Shop, and later became the first Black Master Barber at the Ohio State School of Cosmetology, where he served as lead instructor for 10 years. He mentored generations of barbers and stylists, passing down his skills, wisdom, and work ethic to those who followed in his footsteps. He eventually opened Simba’s Barber Shop before returning to his mechanical roots, retiring as a lead mechanic at U-Haul.

Beyond his career, David had many passions. He loved hunting, fishing, reading, and watching movies about Black history. He was also an avid fan of Western movies and TV shows, spending countless hours enjoying classic tales of cowboys, outlaws, and frontier justice. But perhaps his most steadfast love was for the Cleveland Browns. Despite years of heartbreak, poor performances, and what some might call “entertainment by frustration,” David never gave up on his team.  He stayed loyal through thick and thin, even when the Browns made him question
his sanity.

David’s artistic talents shone through his drawings and calligraphy, showcasing his creative spirit. He also dedicated time to volunteering at nursing homes and offered free haircuts to residents, ensuring they felt cared for and valued.
