Dr. Jacob Ashburn Obituary

Dr. Jacob Julian Ashburn was born on September 23, 1950, in Sandusky, Ohio. He peacefully departed this life on December 20, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Ashburn was a devoted husband, father, scholar, and servant of knowledge. He shared 50 blessed years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patricia Ashburn. He was a proud and loving father to his cherished daughter, Joanna Ashburn, affectionately known as his “princess,” who brought immeasurable joy to his life.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory: his loving wife, Patricia Ashburn; daughter, Joanna Ashburn; siblings, Sister Elder Jennifer Ashburn of Sandusky, OH, James Ronald Ashburn of Toledo, OH, Alfred Harold Ashburn of Indianapolis, IN, Joey (Tiffany) Ashburn of Raleigh, North Carolina; Aaron Ashburn of Akron, Ohio; Carolyn Henderson of Sandusky, Ohio; and Ella Mae Baker of Sandusky, Ohio. He is also survived by his niece, Olivia Ashburn; Nyia Ashburn; Brianna Ashburn; nephew, Spencer Ashburn, Anika Gardner, Rashaun Gardner, Eyen Gardner; his best friend, Don Dixon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. and his brother, Richard R. Ashburn, Jr.

Dr. Ashburn was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Richard R. Ashburn Sr.; Gene Holmes Ashburn; Dr. Exie B. Ashburn; and his brother, Richard R. Ashburn, Jr.

A life-long learner and educator, Dr. Ashburn earned his Doctorate in Philosophy of Education from The Ohio State University. He was the author of Race, Morality, and Public School Policy (published in 1993), a work that reflected his deep commitment to justice, education, and moral responsibility. His intellectual passions were grounded in philosophical study, particularly Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell, which greatly influenced his thinking.

During his youth, Dr. Ashburn excelled in wrestling and basketball and later served as Editor of Sandusky High, demonstrating leadership and academic excellence early in life. Reading and studying were lifelong passions, and he found great joy in music, reflection, and thoughtful dialogue.

Dr. Ashburn was known for his dedication, compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family and profession. He lived a life of purpose, service, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the honor of knowing him.

Though he has transitioned from this earthly life, his legacy will forever live on through the lives he touched, the knowledge he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
