Elizabeth Horsley Obituary

ELIZABETH ANNE HORSLEY, affectionately known as “Lib,” was born on January 31, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Anderson and Mary K. Horsley, Sr.  As the eldest of her siblings, she naturally carried a quiet strength and gentle presence that would shape the lives of those around her. Though reserved by nature, Lib’s calm spirit and warm heart spoke volumes.

From a young age, Lib accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized by her beloved grandfather, the late Reverend William Horsley—a moment that would define her lifelong devotion to faith, family, and service. A proud graduate of Central High School and cosmetology school, she found joy in the art of hairstyling, where her creativity shined. Later, she continued her journey of service as a dedicated teacher’s aide at Sullivant School, where she touched countless young lives until her retirement.

Music was the heartbeat of her youth. Under the guidance of their father, the family formed The Anderson and Mary Horsley Singers, sharing their God-given talents across the city of Columbus. Lib’s rich alto voice also found its place in the Melodiaires, a cherished group founded by her aunt, Melissa Bozman, and she was a faithful member of the Bernard Upshaw Singers. Her voice, much like her spirit, left an indelible mark on those blessed to hear it.

Lib’s greatest treasures in life were her faith, her family, and the people around her. She never met a stranger—only friends she hadn’t yet welcomed. A natural caregiver, she lovingly tended to family members through illnesses and hardship, offering unwavering support and comfort. Her sense of humor, paired with her incredible storytelling, made her the historian of the family. She could recount tales of the Horsley legacy, Hebrew Baptist Church, and generations past with incredible detail, making her a walking encyclopedia of family and faith.

She embraced her younger cousins with open arms and wisdom, always offering sound advice and love without judgment. Her presence was a gift, and her absence leaves a space that will never quite be filled.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Anderson and Mary K. Horsley, Sr.; brothers, Anderson, Jr., Ronald, Donald Horsley, and Elder Marvin Mitchell; sisters, Mary Louise, Gwendolyn Horsley, and Margaret Ann Fitz Hugh; grandparents, Reverend William and Charity Horsley, Bishop Fred and Ora Childs; step-grandmother, Audrey Horsley; and a host of cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She leaves to mourn her passing but celebrate her life: her brothers, Herbie Mitchell and Mark Nunley; along with a loving host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were more like family.

“To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Rest well, Ms. Libby—your light lives on in all of us.
