Fred Wells Obituary

Fred Allen Wells was born on June 4, 1944 in Grand Bay, Alabama to the late Wilmer and Sarah Jane Wells. He was the fifth of six children. Fred was baptized in Bethlehem Baptist Church in Grand Bay and attended Mobile County Public Schools.

In 1962, Fred attended Jackson State University and was a member of the track team. After two years of college, he moved to Mount Vernon, New York with his maternal uncle. While in New York, he met and married Deloris Armistead. From this union two children were born: Torlita Lachel and Reginald Lamont. They moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1970 where Fred’s parents and younger sister, Helen resided. Fred later had a second son, Daryn Lamarr. Fred’s work career spanned from youth counseling at the Buckeye Boys Ranch to sales and real estate.

Fred absolutely loved life. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved to catch walleye from the banks of Lake Erie. Fred enjoyed playing and watching sports. He was fond of playing tennis and ping pong. Fred enjoyed watching Ohio State Buckeye football, NFL, NBA, and track. He also enjoyed his excursions to the casinos. Fred was a music enthusiast with a passion for old school R&B and Jazz. He had several favorite artists such as Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Luther Vandross, Norman Brown, Boney James, Brian Culbertson, Spyro Gyra, and a plethora of others. Fred enjoyed listening to music until his last breath.

Fred had a charismatic personality. He was known for his calm demeanor, sense of humor, and cool dark sunshades. Fred loved spending time with his family and friends in Ohio, Florida, California, Alabama, and New York.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents: Wilmer and Sarah Jane Wells; sisters: Helen Wells Pope, Melvina Wells Odom, and LaVerne Wells Ingraham.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Torlita Wells, Reginald Wells, and Daryn Wells; former wife: Deloris Wells; sisters: Irma Wells Butler (Chester) and Bettye Wells Campbell both of Miami, Florida; Karyn Johnson (mother of Daryn Wells); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and special friends.
