Herschel Alfred Jr. Obituary

Deacon Herschel J. Alfred, Jr., affectionately called “Uncle, Jr.,” was born April 6, 1952. He was the second child born to Estella Bell Alfred and Herschel William Alfred in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Linden McKinley High School.

In 1972, Herschel enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS San Diego AFS6, where he coordinated service and supplies. He received the National Defense Service Medal and after two years of service, he received an honorable discharge.
Herschel met Theresa Ellison at the Ohio State Fair, while both were working there during the summer. After their courtship, they united in holy matrimony on August 25, 1989. They reaffirmed their love on January 31, 2001.

Deacon Alfred worked for several transportation companies, as a school bus driver for Columbus City Schools and Watkins and Perry, made deliveries with Schneider National, and was a snow warrior with the City of Columbus. Car broke down? Did you lock your keys in your car? Deacon Alfred would zip to you as an emergency service provider with AAA. Whatever your need was, he had you covered.

Regardless of what job he was working, you could always find him at The Elevation Church, where he served as deacon and spent more time there than the pastor. Deacon Alfred was a stylish man, and always looked good working for the Lord. Deacon Alfred loved serving the Lord by serving others, sharing scriptures, and through his love for Gospel music. He always greeted members and/or visitors with a smile, a hug, and peppermint candy.

Deacon Alfred, “Uncle, Jr.,” will be deeply missed. He lived a life that could never die, but will live on in the hearts and minds of those he loved. He is preceded in death by parents, Estella Bell Alfred and Herschel William Alfred.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife, Theresa Alfred; daughters, Marcia Alfred and Jasmine Alfred; son, Adam Alfred; step-sons, Antonio (Kenosha) Smoot and Marshall (Zelina) Golden; sisters, Donna (Alfred) Jones and Dianna Alfred; brother, Gregory (Sherri) Alfred; grandchildren, Drayvon Alfred, DaViona Fowler, Daylin Golden, Tony Smoot, Curtis Smoot, Jayden Golden, and Aliya Smoot; special cousins, Phyllis Waring, Cynthia Downey, and Sharita Dinkins; and a host of nieces and nephews.
