James Stevens Jr. Obituary

Mr. James Stevens Jr., a beloved member of the community, was born on September 29, 1950, to James G. Stevens and Adell Stevens in Columbus, Ohio. On Thursday, February 22nd, 2024, the Angels gathered around his bedside and began to beckon him into Heaven's Gates, so he went home to be with the Lord.

James attended church as a young child and was saved at a very early age. As with many things, he was private with his Christian journey and deeply devoted to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

James became a leader among his peers in Junior and Senior High School, church, and in the community. As an athlete, his skills, passion, and abilities drew many young people to him.

He graduated from Mohawk High School, Class of 1969, and upon graduation, he entered Wittenberg University on a basketball scholarship. He was also a proud graduate of New York University, where he received a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. 

James began his career in Education in the Springfield Public School system as a teacher. He also worked as a teacher, for Columbus Public Schools, The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, a substitute teacher in NY Public Schools- PS 29 Bronx, NY. But James spent the majority of his career at United Way. Where He has served as Group Manager Director for United Way of New York and AVP, Director of Public Sector Campaigns for United Way of Central Ohio.

He was married to Octavia “Tina” Hadden and through this union came their one son, James Stevens III. 

James is preceded in death by his father, James G. Stevens, his mother, Adell Stevens, and sisters Rebecca Pryor, and Brenda Williams.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved son, James (Jackie) Stevens III; his grandchildren, Tatyana Stevens in Atlanta, Georgia; Khaliah Stevens, Jia Stevens, and Jett Stevens of Columbus, Ohio; sisters Barbara( William) Middleton of Charleston, South Carolina; Patricia Asberry of Sacramento, California; and Virginia (Clyde) Green of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Richard Stevens of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law, Fred Williams; bonus sister, June Williams of Washington Court House, Ohio; aunts; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and friends.

"Our Family Circle has been broken, a link has gone from our chain, but though we've parted for a while, we know we'll meet again." St. John 14:1-6.

The Stevens Family wishes to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the many families and friends who extended their prayers and support during his recent illness and in this time of bereavement. Special thanks to Bishop William Rogers and the Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church family.
