Leon A Mitchell

Leon age 94 was born to Deacon Ernest and Alice Mitchell in Cincinnati, Ohio. He departed this life November 7, 2023, at 3:23 pm at Riverside Hospital. Leon’s family moved from Cincinnati Ohio to Columbus Ohio after the death of his father Ernest Mitchell.

Leon was educated in Columbus City School District, and graduated from East High School in 1947. Leon attended and graduated from The Ohio State University with his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He began his teaching career in the 1950’s, and later obtained his Master’s Degree. Leon was a Principal of various elementary schools in the Columbus City School District. After retirement Leon mentored new principals, and helped family members with their educational careers.

Leon was passionate about life, and loved living life to the fullest. He loved vacationing with his wife Helen “Flo” Mitchell and together they enjoyed traveling, and spending time with family.

Leon was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and also a founding member of The Cavalier’s Club, a Black Social Club in Columbus Ohio. Leon was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Wednesday Retiree Golf Group which traveled to golf tournaments throughout the United States. Leon loved to watch his sports, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Win or lose, those were still his favorite teams. Leon delivered Meals on Wheels, he loved mentoring family members, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, caring for sick love ones and was always inviting family and friends to sit and visit with him at the kitchen table.

He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother; wife Helen Florence Kennedy-Mitchell, daughter, Tina Mitchell; sister, Louvinia Neal; 2 brothers Roy and James Mitchell.

He leaves to cherish precious memories his son, Todd Mitchell; Grandson whom which Leon raised as a son, Jovon (Tammy) Mitchell; Step-Son, Stephen Lewis; Grandson Price Smith Jr., Todd Ferguson, and Marcus Mewborn; Granddaughters, Shawntel (Keith) Lewis-Smith, and Brieanna White; Great Grandson, Tyvon Mitchell and Brian Smith Jr.; Great Granddaughters, Destiny Williams, Nevaeh Evans, Trinity Ferguson, JaVannah Williams, and Kamiyah White; Great-Great Grandson, Kailer Mitchell; special nephew, Dana Neal; nieces, Karen (Dr. Willie C.) Glover ,Christy Montgomery, Judy Crowder; His best friend of 80 years Ellen Rhodes; a host of cousins and other family and friends.

Leon had a gift of making everyone feel like family. He constantly made it a point to check on people and was always a source of positivity.  His friends describe him as nothing but kind, loving, caring, warm, awesome, and wonderful. He will be missed more than words can say.
