Lorie (Everett) Roquemore, age 84, born in Mississippi, the seventh child out of 14 siblings was called home to be with the Lord on December 14, 2022.
Lorie came to Columbus in 1957 to live with her three-month-old baby daughter. She enjoyed working several years at the Sheraton Hotel and later worked with Kroger, where she attracted the attention of customers enjoying her singing as she worked.
Lorie loved gospel and quartet singing and to sing. She was a member of several quartets: Mildred Clark and Melody Aires, Spiritual Voices, and others. Lorie shared concerts/programs stages with famous singers such the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Shirley Caesar, and a host of other singers and gospel groups. Lorie never missed an opportunity to also sing in her church choirs. On the eve of her passing, she was listening to one favorite singing groups, and right before she closed her eyes for the last time, she seemed to be singing along with the group.
From her sister, Jean, “God blessed the sisters of our family with beautiful voices, but in my opinion, Lorie’s singing voice quality stood above—God blessed her indeed.”
Lorie was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Eddie Roquemore; parents, John T. and Jennie Everett; brothers, William (Lee) and Freddie (Thomas) Everett; sisters, Addie Everett-Love, Sadie M. King, and Orcean Richards (brother-in-law, Sutton Richards); son-in-law, Archie (Buster) Diggs; grandson, Justin Diggs; granddaughters, Kenya and Keshia Diggs; and great nephews, Darrell Love and Severen Clayborn.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Brenda Diggs; sister, Jean (husband, John) McCoy; two stepchildren, Bonita and Nathaniel; brother-in-law, Charles King; grandchildren, Myron, Ian, Brandon (wife, Bacardi), and Ryan; twelve great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; special cousin, Dorothy Brown; good friend, Sandra Dowd; special friends at First Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church; godson, E. LaMarr Scales; and many other relatives and friends.
