“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from
yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9
Beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great- great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Priscilla Newsome-Mattox, was born on February 14, 1927, to Ira and Ollie B. Newsome. Priscilla answered the call from her heavenly Father to come home and rest on Monday, February 5, 2024. She was a graduate of West High School in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Ohio State University.
As a young girl, she was not only a caregiver for her mother who was paralyzed on one side from childbirth, but she had to step in to assist her father in the ministerial and political arena. In her early years, she worked as a switchboard operator for Ohio Bell Company, now known as AT&T. She also worked for 18 years at the Franklin County Juvenile Diagnostic Center, which is now known as the Buckeye Youth Center, 15 years or more as a home health aide, and a few years at the old Macy’s in downtown Columbus. After many years, at the age of 70, she married her college sweetheart, Thomas Mattox.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Mattox; mother, Ollie B. Newsome; father, Ira Newsome; five siblings; and great-grandson, Robert Deondre Bass.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her two daughters, her loving and devoted caregivers, Dorothy Lyles Johnson (Leroy), and Yvonne Lyles West (Michael); sister, Dorothy Newsome Powell (Robert); eight grandchildren, Melissa Hardy (Jamie), Frederick Shepherd, Dejuana Bass, Roger Penick, Duane Pennick, Dawn West, John Michael, and Carol West; ten great-grandchildren; a host of great-great-grands; two daughters- in-Christ, Dianne Mackey, and Clara Foster; and a host of relatives and friends.
