Thomas Edward Hess, 93, was born January 31,1931 in Gallipolis, OH, and finished his race on earth, receiving his heavenly reward on Saturday, March 16, 2024.
He was born on January 31, 1931 to JeGenieva Armstrong and Carl Albert Hess. He has two sisters, Rose and Marsha born to Pearline and Carl Albert Hess.
He was also affectionately known as Deacon Hess, Hess Mo, Hess, Elder Hess, Pastor Hess, Pops, Reverend Stepdad, and PaPa. He was very kind and generous. Yes, we all received birthday cards in the mail with directions on the back of the envelope to NOT open until your birthday.
He received his honorable discharge from the Army where he fought in the Korean War. He received the bronze star for his courageous actions during the war. He retired from Battelle after 44 years of service.
He had side hustles. He was a licensed locksmith. Oh, he also worked at Malibu a long time ago.
He was married to Annie Mae Price Hess until her death on March 16, 2020. He loved her deeply.
He was a 33rd degree mason of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Right of Freemasons. He was a member of the Shrine.
He loved western movies. He loved watching Ohio State football. Well, he would often turn the channel because he thought he was jinxing them.
He was a dedicated member of Second Shiloh Baptist Church, where Elder Christopher A. Bond is Pastor. If you had a question about Second Shiloh history, you called Elder Hess. Reverend Hess served God and Second Shiloh as a Deacon, Deacon Board Chairman, Sunday School Superintendent, Minister of Education, and Assistant Pastor. His favorite scripture was St. John 15:1-5.
He loved to sing “Just A Little Talk With Jesus”. He knew just a little talk with Jesus makes it right, alright. If you saw him sitting on the right front. pew, you probably saw him kick his leg up, move his arm in a circular motion and lift his right arm to the sky in agreement to the ministry that was occurring at the time.
He started his prayer with “Most Holy, Kind, Everlasting Father which art in Heaven. It is again my Father that we come before thee in prayer”. He started each sermon by saying “If the Lord don’t stop by, there shant be any preaching”. He was appreciated for his short but very effective sermons.
He will be deeply missed by all that loved him, including his family, friends, church family, and many others. He truly touched many lives during his time here with us.
He is preceded in death by mother JeGenieva Armstrong; father, Carl Albert Hess; wife, Annie Mae Price Hess; son, Dartanyen Hess.
