Three things I have learned as a Funeral Director

Published: April 25, 2024 by Lori Diaz

This week, I spent time at the Ohio Funeral Directors Association 144th Convention and Expo. I received a renewed sense of purpose for what it is that we do and provide for families in Central Ohio. I am honored to be in the death care profession and humbled to be able to be your Funeral Director. I took some time to think about three things that I have learned because I have chose this career.

1) I have learned to be more compassionate. We meet families at a very low point in life. I have learned to meet families where they are and extend kindness and compassion.

2) I have learned to be more patient. During someone's time of need the hustle and bustle of life has halted. As a funeral professional, I have learned to slow down and and make arrangements at a pace that is comfortable for the family. I have learned to take the time to become a better active listener.

3) I have learned that there is no such thing as routine grief. Grief comes in waves and it also comes in different forms. No one grieves the same and should not be treated any differently. Compassion and patience helps you to be able to extend grace as one goes through this grief journey.

I am so proud to be a Funeral Director and I thank each and every family since December 2017 that has allowed Affinity Memorial Chapel an opportunity to provide A Caring Farewell. There is no greater honor than to serve your family.
